Throughout the past year the Association of University Presses (AUPresses) acted to signify our community’s integrity, stewardship of research, and abiding support of intellectual freedom:
-
- The Association endorsed two statements from American Association of University Professors this year:
- Urging the US Department of Education to rethink its attempt to withhold funding from the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies and asserted that funding of such programs must be entirely free of viewpoint discrimination.
- A clear and passionate case for institutions of higher education in general, upholding our common purpose in developing, evaluating, and sharing knowledge.
- The Association condemned the burning of books written by invited speaker Jennine Capó Crucet by students at Georgia Southern University.
- We opposed the US President’s call for elimination of federal funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, among other worthy agencies and programs.
- We joined the National Coalition Against Censorship and more than 40 additional organizations in condemning attempts to block young people from accessing LGBTQ stories in US schools and libraries.
