Data Collection and Research

The Association continues to collect and disseminate essential information on our sector of the scholarly communications industry, producing both regular statistical reports and topical surveys. Through the past year these have included:

    • Annual University Press Operating Statistics
    • Quarterly Sales and Returns Surveys
    • Open Access Task Force Survey
    • Biennial Press Reporting Structure Report

The Association was also pleased to support expanded university press data collection for the 2019 Lee & Low Diversity Baseline Survey. This second phase of a well-regarded study of the demographics of the US publishing industry saw 36 AUPresses members participate.

After a general scan of available information and existing research, the Open Access (OA) Task Force created by President Kathryn Conrad decided to undertake a survey of members’ OA activity, experiences, and perspectives, which will inform the recommendations presented to the board later in 2020.

The Operating Statistics Task Force, charged by 2018-19 President Jennifer Crewe, has continued to explore potential changes to the annual data collection program, focusing on whether a dynamic tool or more comprehensive visualization of data might be feasible.
